How to bag your dream IT job

Applying for a job can be a daunting task, especially if you feel under-prepared or in-experienced.

It is therefore very important to know where your cause for concern is justified and where it isn't.

Take catering for example; you love to cook, you wow your friends with incredible dishes and you thrive under pressure - all you really need is a foot in the door to build up some valuable experience working under a fully trained chef.

...Compare this to someone who loves being outdoors and is a sport enthusiast - just because they have the basics down, doesn’t make them credible to teach a class of 30 lively students and can ensure they’ll pass their GCSE’s.

Now you’re right, that was a pretty black and white example, but what I’m getting at is, making sure you’re clued up on what your dream job requires, is hugely important. It prepares you in terms of improving both your knowledge and confidence and shows your potential employer that you mean business.

It’s a little bit of swings and roundabouts too, as some jobs might be happy to employ you, get you started, and train you up on the job. In these cases the candidate has usually shown some initiative and strengths in other relevant areas, whether in work experience or training of a similar nature.

So how can you do better than other candidates, be more desirable than them and ultimately bag the job that everyone else desperately wants?

Well I have to be honest; there is no hard fast rule to securing a job, but there are certainly things you can do to help give you a very good shot!

Firstly, know your subject. Read up on all things techy - the latest gadgets and gizmos, the best software and why it’s stealing the show.

Find someone who knows more than you and who is willing to share their expertise with you. (And let’s be honest, no matter where you are in the pecking order, there is always going to be someone who has something to teach you that you don’t know). These people are like your mentors and are pretty invaluable. Don’t take them for granted, and don’t be too proud to take their advice.

And lastly, work hard. Give yourself the best shot at achieving your dreams. Whether that means trying different working spaces to find the one that suits you, or repeating the same chapter of a book over and over again until it sinks in; whatever suits you.
