IT technicians play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth running and maintenance of computer systems.

IT technicians, also known as IT technical support officers, monitor and maintain IT systems and networks. They are responsible for solving software and hardware problems for end users and keeping technology accessible at any time to businesses and organisations.

Although they work mainly on-site, IT technicians may be required to resolve computer issues remotely by phone or email.

The IT technician’s duties usually include:
  • installing and configuring computer systems
  • maintaining and testing computer hardware and software
  • diagnosing faults and resolving technical issues
  • troubleshooting and repairing network problems
  • fixing peripherals such as printers and scanners
  • setting up new equipment and updating existing systems
  • carrying out computer equipment inspections to determine electrical safety.
Career Progression

A strong technical background is a good stepping stone and IT technicians may be able to specialise in various areas of the industry such as programming and network engineering.

Large-sized companies and firms often rely on diverse teams to work out different areas of their IT infrastructure therefore experienced technicians could have the opportunity to move into a specialist role.

Progression into senior positions is also possible for qualified IT specialists. From supervising the IT support staff to managing the maintenance schedule throughout the company, the career development prospects are promising.
