How to become an IT Security Engineer

The IT security engineer protects data from malicious software and cyber attacks.

The role of the IT security engineer is critical for every company, business and organisation that uses computer systems.

If you follow this career path, you will work to ensure network safety and fix any IT security breaches caused by malware.

In other words, you will secure computer systems to prevent cyber attacks and unauthorised access.

For instance, a common problem the IT security engineer is expected to deal with is the removal of harmful software that has been added without the user’s approval.

The typical duties of the IT security engineer include:

• eliminating cyber threats, such as hacking, phishing and pharming
• installing programs to remove spyware and viruses
• protecting companies’ sensitive information from malevolent programs
• securing computer networks
• detecting networks’ weak spots by conducting penetration testing
• efficiently addressing computer systems’ vulnerabilities
• carrying out regular software updates and system upgrades to keep the security level high.

Career progression and conditions:

• Starting from entry-level roles, you may progress into a senior IT security engineer. You will then supervise and train IT staff as well as manage the company’s computer security strategy.
• You will normally work 35 to 40 hours a week, but you may also be on call working outside of office hours when needed.
• Finding a job might not be as hard as you may think. The vast majority of companies use computer systems and IT security is always a priority.
• You may find yourself being a member of an IT team or working for a specialised IT security consultancy.
